About us

Our story

ਰੂਹ (Rooh) means soul. Bhangra and Giddha have brought that out of us as dancers. It is a part of Punjabi culture that causes our community to show up for its own.

The society

A society built by a dancer with a dream

The Rooh Arts & Culture Society was formed by a dancer in British Columbia who wanted one thing: a room big enough for everyone and for the performers to feel good knowing they were able to make a difference with what they love most, dancing.

Our hope is a circuit where every young dancer sees a community that shows up for them. When the community comes together, culture is passed down, and we want to make sure that keeps happening for generations to come.

Our purposes

What the Society exists to do

  1. 01

    Celebrate and preserve Punjabi heritage

Language, rhythm, and story are carried in us before they are written down. The competition is one way we keep them moving, passed from one generation to the next.

  2. 02

Unite the community in sportsmanship and respect

Teams compete hard and congratulate one another. Bhangra and Giddha belongs to everyone who honours it, and our stage is open to every team that does.

  3. 03

    Give back each year

The majority of net proceeds from every competition are donated to a charitable cause. The celebration is the point; the giving is the promise.

Our team

Volunteers, dancers, neighbours

The Society is run by a small board of volunteers and the many hands that make competition day happen.

Non-profit

The Rooh Arts & Culture Society is a registered non-profit society in British Columbia.
